Wissenschaftsberichterstattung versus Infotainment - Renommierte Koreanische und Deutsche Medienvertreter diskutierten in Berlin in exklusiver Atmosphäre

Wo hört Wissenschaftsberichterstattung auf und fängt Infotainment an? Wer berichtet wie durch welches Medium? Wie präsent ist Wissenschaftsberichterstattung in Deutschland und in Korea tatsächlich und was bewirkt sie wirklich? Wer finanziert das Berichten über Wissenschaft und ihre Ergebnisse? - Diese und andere Fragen standen eine Woche lang im Mittelpunkt einer deutsch-koreanischen Diskussion in exklusiver Atmosphäre des Max-Planck Tagungszentrums in Berlin.

Unter dem Titel "Science Coverage vs. Infotainment - Claims, Challenges and Best Practices in Today’s Media" diskutierten bekannte Wissenschaftsberichterstatter beider Länder Anfang Dezember 2010 im Rahmen eines geschlossenen Workshops für ein ausgewähltes Fachpublikum, um wichtige Innenansichten zur aktuellen Situation wissenschaftlicher Berichterstattung im jeweils anderen Land zu gewinnen und sich persönlich zu vernetzen. Beide Länder waren bei diesem ersten ADeKo-Fachworkshop in Deutschland durch führende Stimmen ihrer Medien- und Wissenschaftsszene vertreten. So reisten aus Korea Vertreter des führenden staatlichen Fernsehsenders KBS, der ältesten unabhängigen, englischsprachigen Zeitung Korea Times, auflagestarker Zeitungen wie Joongang-Ilbo, Dong-a mit ihrem Spezialblatt Dongascience, der Seoul Newspaper, aber auch des populären Privatsenders SBS sowie wichtige Vertreter des Korea Research Councils of Fundamental Science and Technology (KCRF), des Korea Institutes of Science and Technology Evaluation & Planning (KISTEP) und des Korea Advanced Institutes of Science and Technology (KAIST) an. Die deutsche Seite wurde von der Wissenschaftspressekonferenz (WPK), dem Berufsverband der Wissenschaftsjournalisten in ihrer fachlichen Planung unterstützt, die ihrerseits aktiv vertreten war durch Journalisten des ARD-Fernsehens, der Deutschen Welle und des Tagesspiegels. Weitere deutsche Teilnehmer stellten Wissenschaftsberichterstattung u.a. bei der Max-Planck-Gesellschaft, des Nachrichtenmagazins der Spiegel, der Tageszeitung Die Welt, des Wissenschaftsmagazins P.M. und der FAZ vor.

Neben dem Seminarteil des Workshops besuchten die Teilnehmer renommierte deutsche Forschungseinrichtungen u.a. in der Wissenschaftsstadt Berlin-Adlershof, wobei besonders auch die laufenden bilateralen Wissenschaftsbeziehungen eine große Rolle spielten, wie bespielsweise am Max-Born-Institut, am Fritz-Haber-Institut (Max-Planck-Gemeinschaft) und am Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (Leibniz Gemeinschaft). Spannend in der deutschen Hauptstadt, die auch in puncto Wissenschaft eine ganz besondere Rolle in der Wiedervereinigung der beiden deutschen Staaten spielte, war zu sehen, wie zum Teil sehr gelungen dieser Prozess an einzelnen Wissenschaftsstandorten abzulesen war.

Der Workshop zeichnete sich durch sein individuelles Format aus, das Möglichkeit bot, in persönlichem Rahmen und exklusiver Athmosphäre eine Woche lang von der Metaebene des Wissenschaftsjournalismus bis hin zu ganz konkreten Fragen wie: "Woher nehmen freie und angestellte Wissenschaftsjournalisten ihre Stories?" - "Worin unterscheidet sich die Wissenschaftsberichterstattung von Wissenschaftsorganisationen und -einrichtungen von öffentlichen und privaten Medien?", "Wie rekrutieren sich Wissenschaftsjournalisten in Deutschland und Korea?" - "Wie werden die erfolgreichen Wissenschaftsberichterstatter vergütet?" - "Worin besteht die gesellschaftliche Motivation in beiden Ländern für eine optimale Wissenschaftsberichterstattung?" - "Wie funktionieren Fachverbände von Wissenschaftsjournalisten & worin unterscheiden sie sich im Vergleich zu klassischen Journalistenvereinen?" und vieles andere mehr.

Der Eröffnungsempfang am Rande des Workshops hatte die deutschen und koreanischen Teilnehmer bereits aufeinander eingestimmt. Großartige Unterstützung fand sich durch die Grußworte des koreanischen Botschafters in Berlin, SE Moon, Tae-Young, den Präsidenten der Deutschen-Physikalischen Gesellschaft & Direktor am Max-Born-Institut, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Sandner, den Vizepräsidenten der Deutsch-Koreanischen Gesellschaft & ehemaligen Botschafters in Korea, Michael Geier und die Bundestagsabgeordnete & Mitglied der Deutsch-Koreanischen Parlamentariergruppe, Sabine Weiss. - Auch hier galt das Exklusivitätsprinzip: Unter den Gästen befanden sich neben der koreanischen Delegation hochrangige Vertreter der deutschen Wissenschaft und Presse, Vertreter aktueller bilateraler Wissenschaftskooperationen, Mittlerorganisationen und einige Wirtschaftsvertreter, die neben unmittelbaren Netzwerkkontakten auch Möglichkeit der eingerichteten Informationsbörse machten, die allen Gästen des Abends eine Selbstdarstellung ihres Hauses bzw. ihrer laufenden Projekte ermöglichte.

Die Workshopwoche endete mit einem gemeinsamen Mittagessen im Restaurant der Glaskuppel des Bundestages und mit einem Gespräch mit Herrn Dr. Berg, der nach seiner Tätigkeit für die Deutsche Welle seit einigen Jahren im Bundestag arbeitet. Herr Dr. Berg war bereits 2009 als Gastredner zur ADeKo-Fachkonferenz nach Seoul gereist, was ihn motivierte, sich in Berlin für die koreanischen Gäste besonders viel Zeit zu nehmen.

Teilnehmer und Organisatoren blicken nach dieser interessanten und erfolgreichen Woche hoffnungsvoll in das nächste Jahr, in dem möglicherweise eine Folgeveranstaltung in Seoul stattfinden kann.
Die Veranstaltung wurde vom deutschen Forschungsministerium, BMBF, großzügig finanziell unterstützt und fand im Rahmen des Projektes "ADeKo - Brücke nach Deutschland" statt, das auf die stärkere Verlinkung ADeKos mit Einrichtungen in Deutschland zielt.

Seoul City is to open up its biannual internship for foreign students here to work in the metropolitan government and experience the city from the inside.
The city will invite 40 foreign students to a five-week Global Internship Program in several departments of the municipal government starting Jan. 7, officials said Monday.
The GIP, the first-ever international internship program led by a governmental organization, started in 2008 to offer foreign students in Seoul universities to experience the city’s administration.
The selected interns will be working five days per week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will be allocated to one of the 22 departments of the metropolitan office that interact with overseas cities or foreign residents here.
The office will put into consideration their nationalities, academic majors and fields of interest before the allocation, officials said.
The interns will mostly be involved in analyzing overseas examples of city administration and resolving the everyday inconvenience which foreigners encounter while living in Seoul.
“The program will offer foreign students a chance to develop their careers and understand the city’s affairs from an insider’s perspective,” said a city official.
“It will also help Seoul find out how it needs to improve in order to truly become the top-class foreign-friendly city which it aims at becoming.”
The GIP participants’ pool will also function as a potential diplomatic infrastructure for the city in a long-term view, the official said.
So far, a total of 140 foreign students from 30 different countries have experienced the internship program.
Also, in the summer session earlier this year, 159 applicants competed for 49 places, reflecting the rising interest of the foreign community, officials said.

On 08 October 2010 was the Second ADeKo Symposium Seoul 2010 with this year’s theme "Paths to an Enhanced and Advanced Society - Science Policy in the 21st Century" at the Millennium Seoul Hilton Hotel. On 07 October 2010 the symposium was opened with a reception together with the celebrations of the 03 October at the residence of the German Ambassador.
Before Dr. Kwon, Moon-Sik (ADeKo Board Member) introduced the lecture of Prof. Dr. Suh, Nam Pyo (President of KAIST) welcome speeches were held from President of the Constitutional Court of Korea Dr. Lee, Kang-Kook (a Germany Alumni), the German Ambassador to Seoul Dr. Hans-Ulrich Seidt (ADeKo Board Member ex officio) and the Assistant Minister of MEST Dr. Kwack, Chang-Shin.
After lunch which was accompanied by a luncheon speech on the general theme "Paths to an Enhanced and Advanced Society" the two panels took place.

Panel 1 "Higher education systems and job market" was opened with lectures by Prof. Dr. Kim, Young Gil (President of Handong Global University) and Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Ulrich Teichler (Kassel University, INCHER). Thomas Schröder (German Embassy Seoul) moderated this panel and lead in to the panel discussion with the panelists Prof. Dr. Moon, Hyumni (Baeksuk University), Dr. Lee, Seong-Cheol (Hyundai Motors) and Kang, Shin-Who (Education Reporter of Korea Times).
The bigger panel 2 "Funding of universities and research institutions" moderated by Kim, Joohwan (Fraunhofer RO Korea), was introduced by lectures from Dr. Markus Baumanns (former Board Member of ZEIT-Stiftung Ebelin und Gerd Bucerius), Dr. Lee, Yongmo (NRF) and Dr. Klaus Birk (DAAD). For a inspiringly panel discussion the panelists Prof. Dr. Im, Chan (Konkuk University), Dr. Kim, Ikseung (Research institute for small and middle industries), Prof. Dr. Thomas Neeße (FAU Busan) and Dr. Joo, Young-Sup (MKE) were involved.
The symposium finished with closing remarks from the ADeKo Chair of the Board Prof. Dr. Lee, Ki-Su.
Directly after the symposium the ADeKo general meeting was held where the new board and chairman were elected for 2011-2012. These were presented at the dinner officially.
All ADeKo members were delighted when the new prime minister of Korea Kim, Hwang-Sik (ADeKo Board Member) complimented ADeKo in his dinner speech.
There are more conferenced planned with the general theme "Paths to an Enhanced and Advanced Society" but next year the focus will be on the committees.

State Secretary Schütte meets ADeKo-Board and supports ADeKos "Brückenbau" to Germany

The State Secretary from BMBF, Dr. Georg Schütte, visited Korea in March. He was accompanied by a 11-member delegation, with whom he made political visits to the responsible ministries of science MEST and MKE and conducted numerous discussions with institutions and companies in the field of science and technology and the first time with the ADeKo-Board.
The board was fully represented.

In the center of the discussion were the actual work of ADeKo and the focus on supporting of bilateral cooperation of AdeKo especially in science, technology and education in the future. In an official meeting of the ministries of both countries, ADeKo was worldwide the only profound alumni network, which was represented institutionally in such a meeting, but received the commitment of the ministries of both countries for the support of projects and events to promote bilateral cooperation in science, technology and education. The two Korean ministries MEST and MKE will provide project-related support and also the BMBF.

State Secretary Schütte gave further funding from Germany to build a continuous exchange with Germany. This means an establishment of an official ADeKo-Contakt in Germany. ADeKo events are also planned in Germany, often in tandem with Korean, Germany-based institutions. They should use and promote the potential of ADeKo and contribute to make the German-Korean relations to a wider public access in both countries.

The project called "Brücke nach Deutschland" will be initially for one year. This also provides further support for ADeKo and its concrete activities in Korea. It includes inter alia fields such as event management, PR and general ADeKo-organisation support. The total investment in this project is around € 90,000 for the current year.

Stata Secretary Schütte believes that this project gives an acceleration of the independence of the alumni network and expressed very confident about the success of the planned ADeKo activities this year. This also includes the Second ADeKo Conference which will be in October. It is expected the participation of the ministries of both countries.

This is the meeting to Wissenschaftlich-Technischen Zusammenarbeit (WTZ), in English Korean-German Committee Meeting on Science and Industrial Technology (KGCCSIT). This meeting is an institution with many countries of the world which takes place every year and provide a framework for the respective bilateral scientific and technical cooperation. There are negotiating strategies and individual projects, which represents the interests of both sides. For the WTZ with Korea is on the German side the BMBF (Federal Ministry for Education and Research) and on the Korean side MEST (Ministry of Science and Technology) and MKE (Ministry of Knowledge Economy). The meeting is held alternately in Korea and Germany and is perceived by a number of research institutions and partners in the ministries.

Major topics this year were: the cooperation in the field of KMU and innovation clusters with the aim of further promoting innovation in the field of the middle class, the expansion of higher education cooperation that focuses on the research sector and the strategic support of the work of ADeKo.
